General John “Black Jack” Pershing
leads Battery A south out of the barracks of Roswell in 1916. Mission: to find
and catch Pancho Villa in Mexico. Left, the general poses for a civilian
photographer en route. Below: once out of town, the soldiers string out into a
more relaxed formation. As a lieutenant, Pershing was also stationed at Fort
Stanton during the Apache Wars.
